After almost three decades living in or near Bridgeport, Alecia Sirk got a chance to travel. She left behind 10-years of work in journalism, most of which was spent at Morgantown's Dominion Post, for a career in city planning. Along with her husband, Pat Ford (a graduate of the LWV Class of 2000), Alecia spent time Baltimore, Charleston, Pompano Beach, FL, and, finally Pittsburgh, before settling in Hardy County. Alecia's first experience in city planning came from editing comprehensive plans for her husband's Baltimore engineering firm. From there, she became a planning project manager and later served as the City Planner for Margate, located in South Florida near Ft. Lauderdale. Planning led Alecia to her true career passion: downtown revitalization. In Pittsburgh, she served as the Executive Director of the Oakland Business Improvement District. From there, she took over the city's Mainstreets Pittsburgh Program, giving her a chance to implement the national Main Street program in 10 neighborhoods citywide. While her travels took her from sea shores to city lights, Alecia found herself longing for the rolling hills of West Virginia. In 2008, Alecia and Pat chose a part of the state they had yet to call home - the Potomac Highlands. In 2009, she became the Executive Director of the two-year-old Hardy County Chamber of Commerce and loves her work with businesses in this growing, but still wonderfully rural, part of our state.
