Avon Cobourne Jr. is one of five children born and raised in Camden, New Jersey. He was a stellar student-athlete that afforded him a scholarship to West Virginia University. While at WVU he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, while minoring in Communications in 2003. While at WVU Avon was on the football team and enjoyed a lot of team and personal success. He was a team captain for his junior and senior seasons. Avon would eventually become the All-Time Leading Rusher in WVU and Big East Conference history. He was recently inducted in the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. After the success at WVU, Avon went to the NFL and played with the Detroit Lions. With WVU and the Lions Cobourne participated in community outreach and fundraisers to raise awareness for childhood illness. From the NFL Avon went to Canada where he had success on the field and in the business world. He won a couple of championships and his leadership allotted him the MVP of one of the games. After 10 years of playing professional football, he transitioned out of playing and started coaching in the CFL. He coached for four years where he led players to have success on the field as well as helping them develop and grow off the field. Avon had the opportunity to join the YMCA in 2017 to help facilitate community relationships and develop relationships with the business community. Last summer Avon produced a program that involved transporting the children, feeding the children, teaching them to swim, involving community mentors, and drawing the young men and women in with a basketball league. He is now a Branch Director at the Downtown Charleston YMCA located in the heart of the city on Quarrier St. Avon found his way back to West Virginia because he is married to a native of Charleston, Rebecca. She owns Charleston very first braiding salon and together, they have 3 beautiful babies Avon 7, Quion 6, and baby girl Nova 14 months. The Cobourne family loves to travel, watch movies, and make new friends on their adventures.
