Jeff is a resident of Fairmont, where he lives with his wife, Julia and son, David. He is a graduate of the College of Wooster, in Ohio. After graduating from college, Jeff spent two years teaching high school in Virginia, while working towards a Master’s degree in Education Administration. He then entered law school at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh where he founded the Educational Law and Policy Society. Jeff worked for each of the Pennsylvania Intermediate Appellate Courts while in law school. Following graduation from Duquesne, Jeff moved to West Virginia where he worked as a law clerk for one year. Subsequent to clerking, he joined a defense firm in Clarksburg, West Virginia where he became partner in 2013. Since starting private practice, Jeff has focused on the defense of insurance companies and their insureds, in complex civil litigation with a speciality in oil and gas litigation and bad faith defense. Jeff was named the 2015 Young Lawyer of the Year for the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia. He currently sits on the Board of Governors for the same organization while also maintaining an active role in the DRI Insurance Law Committee. Jeff also serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the North Central West Virginia Community Action Association which oversees the Head Start and Early Head Start programs for a large portion of West Virginia. In January 2019, Jeff founded the law firm of Varner & Van Volkenburg, based in Clarksburg. The firm focuses on the defense of catastrophic loss claims and insurance coverage and bad faith claims.
